THE FIRST STEP:

        MAKE A PLAN

Planning For The Next Move

Can Save

Headaches and Heartaches

There are so many positive stories to share of people making a move from their long-time homes to a retirement living community.  Unfortunately there are many challenges people face when the move is the result of an unexpected crisis.  It is so important to have a plan in place. Having a discussion with your parents,  your spouse or family members about the circumstances that might make a move necessary is the first step.

Start the process by asking three basic questions:

Whether to Move? For some people, their home is set up perfectly to meet their long term needs. Maintenance is scheduled, plenty of friends are nearby, support services are accessible and there are no hazards for someone with declining sight, strength or balance. For others, a move makes more sense than trying to get by in a home that no longer fits their needs.

When to Move? This is a tricky question. “I’m Not Ready!” is a familiar refrain, but rarely are people able to clearly articulate what that means. It helps to talk about the circumstances that make the decision clearer. For instance, when driving becomes impractical or unsafe, or perhaps when maintaining the yard becomes more of a burden than a joy. Whatever the factors are, be sure to look objectively and let go of the fear of change.

Where to Move? Thankfully, the world is full of great options for people ready to downsize. The key is to look around for a living situation that suits individual needs—both now and into the future. No one place is a perfect fit for everybody, so it’s important to visit communities in person, armed with questions about what they can do for you or your family member.

It’s perfectly normal to have some anxiety about moving a family member or yourself into a senior living community.  The most effective way to make the transition smooth is planning ahead by asking questions and looking honestly at what options work best for you and your family.

One of the keys to health and happiness as we grow older is to surround ourselves with people who understand the challenges of aging and keep us engaged in life!
